We had an offer on our house in Morinville and while we were on our hht in Wainwright the home inspection was to occur.

We had three cats at the time and a four level split home. We left a note on our door leading to the basement to leave it open. And we had a note in the realtor notes saying to keep that door open.

However during the home inspection that door was shut. Which isolated our one cat in the basement without access to water and our two cats upstairs without access to food or litter for three days. The cats had more than enough resources to have been ok for a long time and our house sitter had an emergency come up and we didn’t realize the cats weren’t checked on for three days after the inspection.

Not only that, I had a storage room with expensive photography equipment and they left that door open. To which the cat locked in the basement had gone in and knocked over my camera bag breaking a $600 lens.

Within about a month and a half we had to put down the cat that was locked in the basement without water due to a decline in health. He wasn’t even ten yet, but there’s no way to know if it was a direct link to a lack of water or if it would have happened naturally.

We had contacted our realtor immediately who then contacted Ashley Moore who was responsible for the inspection that happened. Ashley could not attend the inspection so had a colleague come instead. They tried to blame the cats for closing the door (which they had never done before or after) and offered no remorse for their actions. The did offer three weeks later $150 to help with the broken lens. Which I felt like was just a slap in the face humouring us. We contacted RECA at the advice of our realtor, and they didn’t do their due diligence and missed a lot of facts. They closed the case and there was no consequences for the neglect of the Ashley Moore and her team.

It’s not like as a military family we don’t have enough trauma of having to completely pick up our lives and leave a house and neighbourhood we love. Or have long separations. But to have to also worry about people coming into your home and completely disregarding your space.

According to RECA, “There is no way to confirm if a note on the door was received and understood” but also can’t be expected to read the realtor notes.

So beware of who you are allowing into your home when you are selling.
